Wolf-like Jumping Spider Stalks a Baby Cockroach

Description

Fearsome wolf-like spider... with the tripped-out iridescent fangs brought the end of days for this young cockroach... helping keep the trophic food web going and healthy in this dynamic world of cabin ecology... LOL... Lake Louisa State Park, Florida

That's the thing about common names... lol... but they sure do add local color

Thanks for the comment James :iconjamesmedlin: I appreciate any information to make my description more in sync with Spider Systematics. This spider is apparently in the Salticidae which would make it truly a Jumping Spider, and i see that it is a Phidippus species after looking into it further.... and not a Lycosidae. I did call it a wolf spider more because of its behavior hunting that little cockroach... except maybe not in a pack... but when they are lone... so i'll change that to wolf-like... looks more wolf-like than some Lycosidae to me... and just think, within the Salticidae molecular evidence suggests that the single family Salticidae of spiders has as much diversity as all of the whole class Aves... the birds... that same evidence supports that there may be multiple clades within the Salticidae... (see references within Hill & Richman 2009 Peckhamia). Pretty wild stuff. Thanks for encouraging me to look it up... lol

I do dig the purple iridescent basal segments of the chelicerae, indeed the fang segments of the chelicerae are partially imbedded in the little roach delivering the venom held within the basal segments... a two part punch... colored like that it must be a psychedelic delivery...
