Vanda's Sexy Charm

This beautiful orchid blooms at the south shore gardens of the National Botanic Garden on Kaua'i... they put us up, and their gardens are wonderful to explore and visit.

For all its tropical/subtropical splendor... and incredible biodiversity... Hawai'i has only three native orchids... two at least more closely related to boreal or temperate species than any tropical kin. This beautiful orchid is not one of the three.

This orchid is a Vanda, and appears to be very similar to the natural hybrid that is the national flower of Singapore. Miss Agnes Joaquim is a hybrid that appeared in her garden by the early 1890's... and she made her way to Hawai'i with a sugar baron or two by the 1920's... Lester brought her and she subsequently became a lei staple. Makin' a lei is a beautiful Hawaiian custom...
